2017 Governor's Service Award Presented to East Side Aligned Youth Council Member

East Side Aligned youth council member Jha’Shaira Farmer and District 189 Operation AmeriCorps VISTA Ann Brown received the 2017 Governor’s Service Award, an award that recognizes individual volunteers and volunteer programs to highlight the importance of volunteerism and community service throughout Illinois.

Jha’Shaira was recognized for her participation in East Side Aligned's work over the past three years through the youth council. She also served as a member of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council and was President of the Senior Class at East St. Louis High School this year. This spring, Jha’Shaira is joining the US Navy Reserves this summer and will enroll at University of Arkansas Pine Bluff.

Ann was recognized for her work developing a six-week soft skills curriculum for East St. Louis School District 189 and facilitating this curriculum for 47 students thus far. Ann is a native of East St. Louis and a lifelong champion of change in her community. She dedicates her time, passion and energy to providing opportunities for families, women and youth to ensure financial stability.
